Raw Material and Production Route

The manufacturing route begins with carefully selected bearing steel scrap, which is melted and refined to remove non-metallic inclusions. The molten steel is atomized into shot, then crushed into angular grains. The grit is passed through multiple precision sieves to obtain narrow size fractions. A density separation stage removes hollow or irregular particles, and a final tempering step brings the material to a uniform hardness range.

Each production lot is checked for chemical composition, hardness, particle size distribution, and internal soundness. Test methods align with applicable GB/T and SAE requirements.

Hardness and Metallurgical Properties

Chemical Composition

Element Content (%)
C 0.85 - 1.05
Mn 0.25 - 0.45
Si 0.15 - 0.35
Cr 1.30 - 1.65
S ≤0.025
P ≤0.025

Chromium is present to improve hardenability and wear resistance. Sulfur and phosphorus are kept low to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination of sensitive parts.

Physical Properties

Property Specification
Hardness (HRC) 43 - 49
Hardness Deviation ±2 HRC within a batch
Metallographic Structure Tempered martensite with fine carbides
True Density (g/cm³) ≥7.8
Bulk Density (g/cm³) 4.2 - 4.5 (depends on size)
Hollow Particle Content None detected

Hardness is measured on mounted cross-sections using a Rockwell tester. Density is determined by alcohol displacement. The tight hardness range helps ensure consistent performance.

What This Grit Is Used For

Typical applications are in precision manufacturing where surface cleanliness and dimensional accuracy are critical:

  • Deburring and light oxide removal from bearing inner and outer rings
  • Non-destructive cleaning of precision transmission components
  • Matte finishing of high-end hardware and fasteners
  • Low-dust blasting of precision mechanical parts

This abrasive is not suitable for large-area rust removal, heavy descaling, or rough surface preparation on structural steel.

How to Choose the Right Size

Particle size directly affects cleaning intensity and surface finish. The table below lists standard SG grades and their typical use in bearing processing. Smaller grit is used for finishing and light deburring, while larger grit handles initial oxide removal.

SG Grade Approx. Size (mm) Typical Use
SG 14# 2.80 Large bearing rings, heavy oxide removal
SG 12# 2.36 Medium bearing rings, general descaling
SG 10# 2.00 Small bearing rings, deburring
SG 8# 1.40 Precision bearing components, light cleaning
SG 6# 1.00 High-precision parts, matte finishing
SG 4# 0.60 Very fine finishing, minimal material removal
SG 2# 0.425 Micro-deburring, delicate surfaces

Custom sizes and blends are available on request. We recommend testing on actual workpieces to confirm the optimal size and blasting parameters.

Quality Control and Test Reports

Our laboratory performs batch verification using a direct-reading spectrometer, Rockwell hardness tester, metallurgical microscope, and sieve shakers. Available documents include:

  • Certificate of Analysis (COA)
  • Hardness test report
  • Particle size distribution chart
  • Metallographic structure report

Packaging and Delivery

Standard packaging is 25 kg bags with a moisture-resistant PE inner liner and woven polypropylene outer bag. 1,000 kg bulk bags on pallets are available for large orders. For export, wooden pallets comply with applicable ISPM 15 requirements. Custom packaging and labeling can be arranged. We maintain stock of common sizes and can arrange sea or air freight to most destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes bearing steel grit different from ordinary steel grit?

Bearing steel grit is produced from high-purity bearing steel scrap with lower sulfur and phosphorus, a narrower hardness range, and a more controlled particle shape. This makes it suitable for precision parts where contamination and dimensional accuracy are critical.

What hardness should we expect?

The standard hardness is HRC 43 to 49, with a batch deviation of ±2 HRC. This range provides effective cleaning without over-cutting bearing surfaces.

Can this grit run in our existing blast machine?

Yes, it works in most closed-loop wheel blast machines and air blast systems designed for steel abrasives. We recommend checking separator and dust collection settings if using finer sizes.

Does it produce less dust than regular steel grit?

The dense structure and controlled hardness reduce particle breakdown, resulting in lower dust compared to softer or more brittle abrasives. Actual reduction depends on blasting conditions.

What documentation comes with each shipment?

Each shipment includes a Certificate of Analysis showing chemical composition, hardness, and particle size distribution. Additional reports and the ISO 9001:2015 certificate are available on request.

Can we get a sample before ordering?

Yes, free samples are available for testing on actual bearing components. We recommend evaluating cleaning performance and surface finish before placing a full order.
