Wear-resistant Steel Shot

Shandong Haishan Industrial Technology wear-resistant steel shot is engineered for 24-hour automatic continuous shot blasting lines. Its ultra-low loss and outstanding wear resistance make it a perfect match for unmanned, high-tempo mass production, while significantly reducing manual refill frequency and equipment downtime. This translates into markedly lower consumable and operating costs over long-term continuous production.

Wear-resistant steel shot is made from an alloy steel that includes chromium and manganese to improve hardenability and wear behavior. A cryogenic quenching step after atomization produces a tempered martensitic structure and a hardness range of HRC 52–58. This is higher than the HRC 40–50 typical of standard cast steel shot, which is why the wear rate is lower under the same blasting conditions.

Composition and Hardness Control

The alloying elements are not added for corrosion resistance; they are present to refine the martensite and reduce particle cracking. Chromium contributes to hardenability, while manganese improves toughness during quenching. Sulfur and phosphorus are kept below 0.05% to maintain internal cleanliness. The resulting structure is fine tempered martensite, which provides a good balance of hardness and impact fatigue resistance.

Hardness is checked with a Rockwell tester on mounted cross-sections from each heat. Particle size distribution is verified by sieve analysis following SAE J444. The chemical composition is confirmed by direct-reading spectrometer before release.

These values are obtained from routine production testing. The hardness range is tighter than that of general-purpose shot, which helps maintain consistent wear behavior from batch to batch.

Production Line

The main advantage appears in unmanned or lightly staffed lines where abrasive replenishment is scheduled, not continuous. A longer-lasting shot means the working mix stays closer to specification for a longer period. That can reduce the number of times an operator opens the machine, checks the abrasive level, and adds new media.

There are two other effects worth noting. First, spherical shot causes less wear on blades, liners, and other machine parts than angular grit of similar hardness. Second, because the particles break down more slowly, the dust load in the separator and dust collector is lower than with shot that fractures easily. Both of these contribute to stable operation over many cycles.

If the priority is to remove thick rust or old coating in the shortest possible time, an angular grit is still the right choice. If the priority is to keep an automated line running without frequent intervention, this wear-resistant shot is often the better option.

Suitable and Unsuitable Conditions

This product is designed for continuous shot blasting lines that run for long periods with limited operator involvement. Examples include:

  • Automotive component lines using tumble or hanger machines
  • Foundry casting cleaning systems
  • Steel pipe and profile pretreatment lines
  • High-volume fastener and hardware processing

It is not the first choice for intermittent small-batch work, outdoor blasting with portable equipment, or jobs that require a very deep anchor pattern in a single pass. In those cases, standard steel shot, steel grit, or a different abrasive may give better results for the money.

Test Reports and Traceability

Every batch is sampled for chemical composition, hardness, and particle size distribution. The laboratory uses a direct-reading spectrometer, Rockwell hardness tester, and sieve shaker. Certificates of analysis are shipped with the product. If needed, we can also supply metallographic structure reports, density measurements, and ISO 9001:2015 certification. Batch numbers are traceable back to the raw material heat.

Storage and Handling

Packaging is 25 kg bags with a PE inner liner inside a woven polypropylene outer bag. One-ton bulk bags on pallets are available for large orders, and export pallets meet ISPM 15 requirements. Store the product in a dry area, off the ground. Bags should not be exposed to standing water or continuous high humidity before use.

Questions From the Field

How do I confirm that the higher hardness actually reduces consumption on my line?

The best way is to run a controlled trial. Record the abrasive consumption per ton of processed parts using your current shot, then switch to the wear-resistant grade and keep the same machine settings. Compare consumption and surface quality after a defined period. We can provide a sample quantity for this purpose.

What happens to the shot when the machine runs hot for many hours?

The heat treatment was designed to keep the hardness stable even when the blast machine and the shot reach elevated temperatures during extended operation. Hardness is not significantly affected by normal operating temperatures found in wheel blast machines.

Can I use this shot for parts that will be coated with a thin film?

Surface profile depends mainly on shot size and blasting parameters, not just hardness. If you choose a fine size such as S170 or S230, the profile can be controlled within the range suitable for thin coatings. We recommend a test area to confirm the profile before full production.

Is there a specific size range that works best for continuous tumble blast machines?

Most continuous tumble machines use S230 to S390 depending on the part size and surface requirement. For small precision parts, S170 or S230 may be appropriate; for larger castings, S330 or S390 is common. We can recommend a starting size after reviewing the part geometry and desired finish.

Do you provide a comparison report against standard shot?
