Rust Removal Steel Shot

Shandong Haishan Industrial Technology rust removal steel shot is purpose-built for bulk industrial rust removal and steel renovation projects. Engineered exclusively for derusting applications, it combines strong impact kinetic energy with cleaning efficiency 35% higher than ordinary cast steel shot. The result is dead-angle-free rust removal and uniform anchor patterns, delivering excellent cost performance across steel renovation and rust removal scenarios.

Produced by Shandong Haishan Industrial Technology, a manufacturer with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons and customers in more than 50 countries, this Rust Removal Steel Shot is designed specifically for heavy rust removal. It is not a general-purpose abrasive. The particle size distribution and hardness are tuned to break thick oxide scale, layered rust, and pitting on structural steel, pipes, and outdoor equipment. It should not be used for precision components or surface strengthening.

Design Parameters

The Rust Removal Steel Shot has a medium-high hardness range of HRC 48–52. This is higher than standard cast steel shot, which typically falls between HRC 40 and 50. The harder particles transfer more energy into the rust layer on impact, but the hardness is controlled to avoid becoming brittle. A larger proportion of coarse particles is also included to provide more aggressive impact force. These two changes together improve the ability to remove multi-layer rust without requiring a second pass in many cases.

Parameter Typical Value
Material High carbon steel
Hardness (HRC) 48 – 52
Metallographic Structure Tempered martensite
True Density (g/cm³) ≥7.4
Bulk Density (g/cm³) 4.2 – 4.5
Particle Shape Spherical
Common Size Range SAE S230 – S550 (other sizes available)

Hardness is checked with a Rockwell tester on mounted cross-sections from each production batch. Chemical composition is verified by direct-reading spectrometer. Particle size distribution is measured by sieve analysis according to SAE J444.

Manufacturing and Process Control

The production route is similar to standard cast steel shot: melting high carbon steel, atomizing into shot, quenching and tempering, and then screening. The difference is in the final selection. This product uses a coarser size distribution and a tighter hardness window. A second screening stage removes hollow or broken particles, which would otherwise shatter on impact and reduce cleaning effectiveness. No anti-rust coating is applied; the product is kept in dry storage until shipment to minimize oxidation before use.

Where It Works, Where It Doesn't

This abrasive is intended for heavy rust conditions on carbon steel. Typical jobs include:

  • Renovation of old steel structure components in factory buildings
  • Cleaning of recycled steel plates and sections
  • Derusting of pipes and steel materials stored outdoors
  • Bridge guardrail and support repair
  • Heavy rust removal from ship cabin plates
  • Blasting renovation of construction machinery

It is not suitable for thin sheet metal, precision parts, or any application where a smooth surface profile below 40 μm is required. The high impact energy will produce a rough surface and may deform thin material. For light rust or precision cleaning, a finer steel shot or a different abrasive should be selected.

Selecting the Right Size for Rust Removal

Rust Condition Recommended SAE Size Notes
Light surface rust S230 – S280 Lower profile, less material removal
Moderate rust, thin scale S330 – S390 Balanced cleaning speed and profile
Heavy rust, pitting, thick scale S390 – S550 Higher impact energy, deeper profile
Very thick scale, heavy pitting S550 – S780 Maximum impact, rough finish

The table is a general guide. The optimal size depends on the blasting pressure, standoff distance, and the actual condition of the steel. We recommend testing a small area before full production to confirm cleaning speed and surface profile.

Quality Control and Documentation

Every production batch is tested for chemical composition, hardness, and particle size distribution. The laboratory is equipped with a direct-reading spectrometer, Rockwell hardness tester, and sieve shaker. Certificates of analysis and test reports are supplied with each shipment. Additional documents such as ISO 9001:2015 certification and metallographic reports can be provided on request. We maintain batch traceability from raw material to final shipment.

Packaging and Storage

Standard packaging is 25 kg bags with a moisture-resistant PE inner liner inside a woven polypropylene outer bag. 1,000 kg bulk bags on pallets are available for large orders. For export, pallets are prepared to meet ISPM 15 requirements. Store in a dry, covered area, and keep bags off the ground to prevent moisture absorption.

Common Questions About Rust Removal Steel Shot

Why is the hardness higher than standard steel shot?

Higher hardness increases the energy transferred to the rust layer on each impact, which helps break thick scale and pitting. However, the hardness is limited to HRC 48–52 to avoid excessive brittleness and particle fracture. This range was selected to balance cleaning aggression with abrasive life.

Can this shot be used for surface strengthening or peening?

No, this product is not designed for shot peening or surface strengthening. The coarse particles and high impact energy remove material rather than creating a controlled compressive stress layer. Use spherical steel shot within the peening specification for those applications.

What surface profile should I expect after blasting?

The surface profile typically ranges from 50 to 100 μm on carbon steel, depending on the particle size and blasting parameters. For heavy-duty coating systems that require deep anchor profiles, this product is often suitable. Always verify the profile with replica tape or a surface profile gauge before coating.

Can this shot be recycled?

Yes, in closed-loop blasting systems, the shot can be recycled multiple times. However, because the particles are harder and work on heavy rust, the breakdown rate may be higher than standard shot under extreme conditions. The working mix should be monitored and replenished as needed.

Is this shot suitable for outdoor sandblasting?

Yes, it can be used in open air sandblasting operations. The coarser particles provide the impact needed for outdoor rust removal. However, if the job requires a very smooth finish or involves thin metal, a finer shot or different abrasive may be more appropriate.

What sizes are available for this product?

We can supply a range of sizes from S230 to S780. The most common sizes for rust removal are S330, S390, and S550. The exact size should be selected based on the rust condition and required surface profile. Our technical team can recommend a starting size after reviewing the project details.
